The opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has condemned what it describes as the unlawful arrest of civilians by individuals allegedly acting outside their legal authority.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, UPC President Jimmy James Akena criticised what he called a growing trend of people assuming the role of law enforcement officers by issuing orders and arresting individuals suspected of committing crimes.
Akena also raised concerns about alleged irregularities in the recent 2026 general elections. He claimed that some UPC candidates who won their respective races were not declared victorious because of interference by certain government agencies.
According to Akena, electoral officials announced other candidates as winners under the influence of powerful government figures, instead of declaring those the party believes legitimately won.
He said the UPC parliamentary caucus remains committed to upholding the rule of law, respecting the Constitution, and supporting all authorities that operate within their legal mandate.
Akena added that the party remains open to welcoming individuals and organisations interested in working with the UPC to promote the welfare and interests of the people of Uganda.
