Police Probe Gas Explosion That Left Three Injured, Construction Site Death in Wakiso

By Robert Segawa

Police in Kabalagala are investigating the cause of a gas explosion at Keren Bar and Restaurant in Kansanga, Makindye Division, which left three people seriously injured.

The incident occurred at Keren Bar and Restaurant, where the owners were using gas for cooking.

Addressing journalists at Police Headquarters in Naguru this morning, Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the room was contaminated with gas before the explosion.

Owoyesigyire said preliminary information indicates that one person allegedly lit a match, which ignited the accumulated gas and caused the explosion.

The injured persons have been identified by their first names as Briana, Jewet, Jewel and Livl Berhe. They are reportedly Eritrean nationals and are currently receiving treatment at a health facility in Kansanga.

The police bomb squad responded to the scene and found poor ventilation, broken cups and plates, damaged plastic trays, shattered window glass, damage to part of the external wall, and shelves scattered inside the room.

Preliminary findings indicate that the explosion was caused by a gas leak from a cooking gas cylinder.

Owoyesigyire urged members of the public, particularly those who use gas for cooking, to take necessary safety precautions and have appropriate protective equipment to reduce injuries and help save lives in case of an explosion.

Police say investigations into the incident are still ongoing.

Meanwhile, police in Kira Division, Wakiso District, are investigating a case of alleged rash and negligent acts following the death of a man at a construction site.

According to Owoyesigyire, the deceased has been identified as George Ziwa, who was passing near a three-storey building under construction when a collapsing brick reportedly struck him on the head.

The incident occurred yesterday in Kitikifumba Zone, Wakiso District.

Owoyesigyire said police are conducting investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine what exactly led to the death of George Ziwa.

Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
