Police in Iganga District have arrested 31 suspects in an intelligence-led operation targeting alleged criminal hideouts and black spots in different parts of the district.
The operation, conducted on September 1, 2026, covered areas within Central Division, Northern Division, Nakalama, Bunyiro and Buligo.
According to police, the operation targeted suspected criminal hideouts where individuals allegedly smoke opium and later waylay members of the public and rob them of their property.
A total of 31 suspects — 30 males and one female — were arrested during the operation.
Police said 19 suspects were arrested from the Ssaza Road and Kaliro Road areas, while three suspects were arrested in Buligo with three pangas.
Five suspects were arrested in Nakalama, while another four were apprehended in Bunyiro.
Police also recovered exhibits including quantities of rolled and unrolled marijuana as well as three pangas.
The Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Michael Kasadha, said the suspects are currently detained at Iganga Central Police Station and are facing charges related to possession of narcotic substances and dangerous weapons.
Kasadha said inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
Police have commended members of the public for providing information that facilitated the operation and have assured residents that similar operations will continue to disrupt criminal activities in the district.
The public has also been urged to remain vigilant and report suspected criminal activities to the nearest police station.
