More than 14 civil servants have been arrested in Iganga over allegations ranging from corruption and mismanagement of public assets to the alleged diversion of funds meant for beneficiaries of government programmes, according to Iganga Resident District Commissioner Eric Ssewandigi.
The RDC says investigations are still ongoing and more arrests are expected, as security and anti-corruption agencies widen the crackdown ahead of the visit of Hon. Balaam Barugahara, Minister for Local Government, scheduled for Thursday, 10th September 2026.
According to Ssewandigi, some of those arrested are accused of stealing or misappropriating money intended for Parish Development Model (PDM) beneficiaries, while others are being investigated over alleged illegal sale and dealings in public land.
The RDC also cited a case involving former Iganga District LC5 Chairman Gabula Ezera, who is facing allegations related to job selling. The allegations remain subject to the judicial process.
SOME SUSPECTS ON THE RUN
Ssewandigi says investigations have also established that some suspects allegedly involved in the cases have gone into hiding, prompting regional police to intensify efforts to trace and arrest them.
He says the crackdown will not stop with the initial arrests, warning that individuals found to have abused their positions or mismanaged public resources will be held accountable.
RDC WELCOMES ANTI-CORRUPTION AGENCIES
The RDC has welcomed the intervention of anti-corruption and accountability agencies, saying their involvement will strengthen the fight against corruption and improve accountability in the district.
His remarks come as Minister Balaam prepares to visit Iganga as part of his nationwide campaign against corruption and poor accountability in local governments.
Ssewandigi says the minister’s visit presents an opportunity for residents to openly raise concerns about corruption, land grabbing, misuse of public resources and failures in service delivery.
PUBLIC URGED TO SPEAK OUT
The RDC has appealed to members of the public with information concerning corruption, misuse of public assets, illegal land transactions or abuse of government programmes to report it to his task force.
He says information from the public will be critical in helping authorities identify individuals involved in the alleged abuse of public resources and ensure that cases are properly investigated.
With investigations still active, Iganga could see more arrests in the coming days, as security agencies continue pursuing suspects and examining allegations of corruption and mismanagement across the district
