A total of 30 civil servants in Iganga District and Iganga Municipality have been interdicted following Minister for Local Government Balaam Barugahara’s recent visit to the district, where he raised concerns over service delivery, corruption and the management of public resources.
Of those interdicted, 22 are from Iganga District, while eight are from Iganga Municipality.
The developments come shortly after Minister Balaam’s anti-corruption and service-delivery inspection in Iganga, during which he directed investigations and action against officials accused of failing to protect public resources and properly execute their duties.
The crackdown is still ongoing, according to Iganga Resident District Commissioner Eric Ssewandigi, who says more officials are being arrested as investigations continue.
Among those recently arrested is former Iganga Municipality Speaker Musa Sengoba, who was arrested on Monday by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
Ssewandigi has warned civil servants against what he described as the misuse and mismanagement of public resources, urging them to carry out their duties in accordance with the law.
The administrative changes have also seen Iganga District receive a new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Enid Kajumba, while Iganga Municipality has a new Town Clerk.
Addressing civil servants as she assumed office, Kajumba warned officials to work within the law and avoid actions that could expose them to disciplinary action.
“Let everyone carry his or her own cross. Do the right thing to avoid the storm. Those who have been interdicted, it’s only a room for investigations. When they are done, things will be put right. Whoever does the work badly will be sacrificed, and I am not ready to be sacrificed on your own behalf. I will do my work as the accounting officer,” Kajumba said.
The interdictions and leadership changes come as authorities intensify efforts to strengthen accountability and improve service delivery in Iganga.
Authorities have not yet publicly released the full list of the 30 interdicted officials or detailed the allegations against each officer.
Investigations are ongoing, with more arrests and administrative action expected as authorities continue examining the management of public resources in the district and municipality.
