The minister of agriculture animal industry and fisheries [MAAIF] Frank Tumwebaze has called upon all stakeholders in the piggery sector value chain systems to account for their actions especially observing the regulations that govern them.
He said that the sector would be given more attention in terms of building their capacity in training opportunities to enhance safety and efficiency in the sector.
He also revealed that the government would soon launch a nationwide inspection campaign of all piggery slaughter facilities with the aim of ensuring compliance with safety standards sanitation and hygiene.
The remarks have been made Friday 26 September 2026 by the Assistant commissioner veterinary and Public health Ministry of agriculture animal industry and fisheries Godfrey Kahuta while representing the minister during the official launching ceremony for the Kampala-Wakiso pork dealers and processors Ltd as a principal organisation that had built capabilities to professionalize the pork value chain industry.
The event also witnessed the launch of their professional farmer’s training manual held at Nansana pork World in Nansana municipality Wakiso District.
The launch ceremony was graced by over 100 members and invited stakeholders from the sector and themed “Transformatimg Uganda’s pork value chain through Formalisation, Modernization and Inclusive Growth “.
Kahuta said the government was committed to ensuring that the piggery sector which had not been given due attention and scrutiny would soon be brought to the limelight by launching a nationwide inspection campaign of all piggery slaughter facilities to monitor compliance with safety standards,sanitation and hygiene.amomg other technical regulatory requirements.
He congratulated the Kampala Wakiso pork and processors members for stepping forward to comply with technical registration processes so and pledged to work closely with the government in carrying out sensitization campaigns among the pork sector players to strengthen collaboration and effective services delivery.
The deputy director of intelligence at the operation wealth creation [OWC] Fred Egesa who represented the OWC national coordinator Gen.Salim Sale congratulated the members for coming together and work as a professional business body and encouraged them to become government ambassadors in sensitizing other sector players to ensure they observed the regulations of the industry.
Egesa who serves as the Patron of the Kampala Wakiso pork dealers and processors Ltd urged them to take advantage of the parish development model [PDM] and access the one million which is adequate for a rural farmer to start up piggery project with two piglets and later expand
He encouraged. the pork sector players to join the group which has a good and strong leadership team such that their voice can be heard by the government for any possible technical support in thenearfuture.
Dr Stephen Kibuuse Lule a senior veterinary doctor gave a lecture on how to benefit from the piggery farming to the over 100 members urging them to observe the regulations that govern them.
The Kampala Wakiso pork dealers and processors Ltd chairperson Ssempebwa Livingston said with a membership of over 243 ,across Kampala, Mukono and Mpigi districts at a pioneer level they represent a significant organised force in the country’s pork market.
He said Uganda’s pork market should fully adhere to legal, regulatory and hygiene standards ranging from tax registration to food safety certification.
Ssempebwa noted that they deliver a comprehensive range of services and programmes designed to professionalize the pork value chain and create lasting value for their members and their respective communities
Youth and women Empowerment
The group public relations officer [PRO] Nsibirwa while highlighting on their company profile noted that they target programmes that provide training mentorship and start up support to young people and women seeking to build enterprises in the pork trade and processing sector.
They are developing modern processing capabilities for sausages packaged meats and branded products to unlock premium market opportunities and increase member revenues.
Turning to market linkages, Nsibirwa noted that they plan to connect members to buyers Hotels , restaurants and institutional markets thus reducing dependence on middle men and Improving income for producers and traders alike.
On capacity building and training he observed that they will run training programs on modern pig farming,food safety business management and hygiene standards as well as equipping members with the skills empowering them to compete and thrive.
Luyinda Emmaneul one of the executive members and proprietor of the Nansana pork World and Ensava pork joint along Lubaga Road said Uganda’s pork industry is at a turning point with challenges of informality poor infrastructure and limited market access are real but so is the extraordinary opportunity that lies ahead of the industry transformation journey.
He said that when farmers traders, processors and partners work together under a shared vision and responsibility, guided by professional standards powered by modern tools and anchored in integrity remarkable things become possible.
Luyinda observed that the organisation brings together pig farmers traders, transporters, slaughter operators processors and marketeers who share a common goal of a strong industry that creates job opportunities to citizens and raise taxes for the government.
The members collectively thanked the government through the ministry of agriculture animal industry and fisheries for standing with them in provision of legal and technical guidance as they move forward to professionalize the pork value chain industry.
They called for support in areas of equipment acquisition, professional training, capacity building programmes from the government to help strengthen their operational capacity and capabilities.
They pledged to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders to achieve their dream plans of empowering the steady growth of the piggery sector.
