UPC’s Akena Reaffirms Commitment to Ugandan Children’s Future, Calls for Constitutional Accountability And Respect for The Constitution*

By Jumah Kakomo

Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Michael Akena has reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the welfare and future of Ugandan children, urging political leaders to prioritise the country’s pressing social and economic challenges over individual political ambitions.

Akena expressed concern about child malnutrition, school dropout rates and what he described as the growing tendency for political discussions to focus on personalities and presidential ambitions at the expense of issues directly affecting ordinary Ugandans.

He questioned how the country could meaningfully discuss its future while, according to statistics he cited, approximately one in four children under the age of five experiences malnutrition.

The UPC leader also highlighted concerns about children who leave school before completing their Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), arguing that access to education, proper nutrition and opportunities for young people should remain central to Uganda’s national development agenda.

He criticised what he described as the diversion of public attention towards political rivalries, presidential ambitions and social media exchanges, instead of addressing the challenges affecting families and communities across the country.

On constitutional governance, Akena raised concerns about the involvement of serving military personnel in partisan political activities. He cited Article 208 of the Constitution of Uganda, calling for greater respect for constitutional provisions and the rule of law.

He maintained that political engagement and public debate should take place within the framework of the Constitution and other applicable laws, stressing the importance of accountability and respect for established legal obligations.

Reflecting on his political journey, Akena said his experiences had strengthened his determination to remain engaged in Uganda’s political affairs. He insisted that political pressure, threats and statements on social media would not discourage him from expressing his views on matters of national importance.

He further argued that Uganda’s natural resources and economic potential should translate into better living conditions for its citizens, particularly children, who continue to face challenges related to nutrition, education and access to opportunities.

Akena also referred to his recent engagements with fellow political and African leaders in Tanzania and Zambia, saying the interactions had reinforced his commitment to broader African concerns and the responsibility of political leaders to represent the interests of their people.

Addressing Uganda’s political future, the UPC president argued that the country’s destiny should not be determined solely by the presidential ambitions of individuals. Instead, he challenged those seeking political leadership to present clear policies, development programmes and practical alternatives for consideration by the electorate.

He also cautioned against political intimidation, maintaining that no individual should prevent others from expressing their opinions or participating freely in the country’s political processes.

According to Akena, Uganda belongs to all its citizens, and democratic participation, freedom of expression and constitutional accountability should be respected regardless of political affiliation.

He reiterated that his continued political engagement was motivated by concerns about the country’s future, particularly the circumstances facing children, rather than simply by personal presidential ambitions.
