Bobi Wine election petition withdraw adjourned due to his lawyers’ expired practicing certificates

By Kabuye Ronald

The supreme court has adjourned the hearing of an application by the National Unity Platform (NUP) president and runner up in the recently concluded general election Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu to withdraw his election petition challenging the victory of NRM’ Yoweri Kagutta Museveni to Friday at 9am.

The adjournment followed Bobi Wine’ lead lawyer and also Busiro East Legislator Medard Ssegona informing court that his and his two other colleague’s practicing certificate expired on 1st March and the renewal process has delayed.

In his response the Attorney General William Byaruhanga was okay with Kyagulanyi’s lawyers proceeding with the matter despite lack of a valid practicing certificate citing the importance of the matter and limited time court is left with to dispose of the matter.

However, the Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo who is leading the panel of nine judges, decided to adjourn the matter to Friday at 9am.

He also allowed Kyagulanyi’s lawyers up to 5pm today to get a temporary practicing certificate that runs up to 18th March 4, 2021 from the chief registrar.

As a requirement every advocate must apply to the law council to renew their practicing certificate once a year and must also present a copy of the same whenever he or she appears in court.
