Brothers of Christian Instruction Celebrate Centenary of Dedicated Service in Education and Spiritual Growth

By Elijah Khisa

The Brothers of Christian Instruction Community in Uganda has celebrated 100 years of dedicated service to humanity through the provision of quality education and promotion of spiritual growth among Christians.

The colourful centenary celebrations were held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at the community’s headquarters in Kisubi, Wakiso District.

The Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, Bishop Paul Ssemogerere, congratulated the Brothers upon reaching the milestone, describing their century-long contribution to education and evangelisation as a significant achievement.

He said the arrival of the Brothers of Christian Instruction in Uganda marked the beginning of a long journey of investing in education and spiritual nourishment across East Africa.

According to Bishop Ssemogerere, the community’s contribution has played an important role in developing human resources and promoting socio-economic development among the communities it serves.

The chief guest at the celebrations was Vice President Jessica Alupo, who represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

On behalf of the President, Alupo made a donation of Shs30 million towards supporting the community’s education and evangelisation programmes.

In her remarks, Alupo recalled her previous efforts to support schools owned and managed by the Brothers of Christian Instruction during her tenure as Minister of Education and Sports.

Alupo, a practising Catholic, expressed gratitude for being part of the centenary celebrations and pledged continued government support for the Brothers’ investment in education.

The Katikiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, also congratulated the Brothers upon reaching the milestone.

Mayiga said the fraternity had enabled thousands of young people to access education through its institutions, with many former students now serving humanity in various professional fields across the world.

The Provincial Superior of the Brothers of Christian Instruction Community in Uganda, Brother Casio Ayizire, thanked the Christian community and other stakeholders for their continued support.

He called for renewed efforts to strengthen the community’s strategic development agenda and ensure the sustainability of its educational and evangelisation programmes.

The Assistant Provincial Superior of Uganda, Brother John Bosco Ssenkabirwa, who also chairs the centenary organising committee and serves as headteacher of SMACK Kaboja Campus in Kyengera, urged young people to support the activities and programmes of the Brothers.

He said such programmes provide young people with opportunities that can add value to their educational and personal development.

Brother Ssenkabirwa also thanked President Museveni and the Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Kataaha Museveni, for the technical and logistical support extended to the community’s educational institutions across the country.

He said SMACK Kaboja Campus has the necessary infrastructure and technical facilities to support high academic performance among students.

Ssenkabirwa explained that the Kaboja campus was established after enrolment at St Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK) reached its capacity.

He urged parents to consider enrolling more students at the campus to enable them to access quality education and prepare for a bright future.

The celebrations were attended by the Titular Head of Islam in Uganda, Dr. Kassim Nakibinge Kakungulu, as well as hundreds of stakeholders, including students, teachers and headteachers from the 27 schools and institutions owned and managed by the Brothers of Christian Instruction Community.

Among the institutions owned and managed by the community are the University of Kisubi (UNIK), St Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK), Caltec Academy Makerere, and SMACK Kaboja Campus in Kyengera, among others.

The centenary celebrations marked a significant milestone in the history of the Brothers of Christian Instruction and highlighted their longstanding contribution to education, evangelisation and community development in Uganda and beyond.
