The Electoral Commission (EC) is calling on all Ugandans to actively engage in critical electoral processes as the country prepares for the 2025-2026 general elections. EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, delivering the message on behalf of EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama, highlighted the upcoming update of the national voters’ register, set to begin on January 20, 2025. This exercise is seen as a cornerstone in ensuring a credible, free, and transparent election.

“A clean and accurate voters’ register is the foundation of a fair and free election,” Mucunguzi emphasized, urging all eligible citizens to participate in the registration and update process. He underscored that the voters’ register update is a significant part of the electoral roadmap and essential for maintaining the integrity of the elections.
The EC further reminded Ugandans of the importance of peaceful participation in the electoral process. “We ask that all Ugandans engage in these activities with respect for each other and the law,” Musinguzi added, stressing the Commission’s commitment to a stable and united election environment.

The update, which was initially scheduled from January 3 to January 24, 2025, will now take place from January 20 to February 10, 2025. The delay was explained by Justice Byabakama as a necessary step to ensure adequate logistical and administrative preparations. “This adjustment allows us to ensure readiness at all levels and give every eligible citizen the chance to participate effectively,” he said.
The registration will occur daily, including weekends, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at designated update stations across the country. The exercise will enable Ugandans who are 18 and above to register, update their details, transfer to new polling stations, and ensure that students who recently turned 18 can also register. Those already on the register will also have the opportunity to verify their information.
The Electoral Commission is determined to ensure that the 2025-2026 elections are inclusive, peaceful, and fair, affirming the fundamental democratic right of every Ugandan to vote in an environment of respect and tranquility.
