Democratic Party to Scrutinize Coalition Proposals Ahead of 2026 Elections

By Jumah Kakomo

The Opposition Democratic Party (DP) has announced that it will carefully evaluate any applications from individuals and groups seeking to form coalitions ahead of the 2026 elections. The party’s Secretary General, Gerald Siranda, confirmed that the DP had received a letter from the Democratic Alliance pressure group, which proposed political engagement in preparation for the upcoming elections.

In his statement, Siranda emphasized that the DP’s cautious approach to potential coalitions stems from past experiences where alliances have not been beneficial for the party. He expressed skepticism about forming such partnerships, noting that previous coalitions have, at times, caused harm to the party’s interests and principles.

“While we are committed to fostering unity and cooperation, any potential alliances must align with the DP’s core values and goals,” Siranda said. “We will thoroughly assess all coalition proposals to ensure they are in the best interests of the party and its supporters.”

Siranda assured that the party’s leadership would review every coalition application on its merits, taking into account the potential risks and rewards before making any decisions. The DP’s cautious approach reflects a commitment to maintaining its integrity while exploring possible collaborations that support its political vision.
