Couple Arrested Over Death of Nine-Month-Old Baby in Pit Latrine

By Robert Segawa

Police at Kajjansi have arrested a couple in connection with the death of their nine-month-old baby, whose body was retrieved from a pit latrine in Makindye-Ssabagabo, Wakiso district.

The deceased has been identified as Mugisha Jeremiah Anakeleti, the son of Nakalanzi Irene, 19, and Ssegimana Joseph, 37, a chapati maker and resident of Kigo-Lunyo in Wakiso district.

According to police, the incident occurred on October 4, 2026, at about 2:00pm at the couple’s home in Makindye-Ssabagabo.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects are the biological parents of the deceased and had reportedly been experiencing domestic misunderstandings.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said Ssegimana had allegedly abandoned the family and relocated to a nearby area, where he reportedly started living with another woman.

On October 4, the couple reportedly had a disagreement during which Ssegimana removed his household belongings from the family home.

He allegedly told Nakalanzi that he was at a bus terminal in Kampala and invited her there. However, he reportedly returned to the family home in her absence, removed his belongings and relocated them to his new residence.

Police allege that the development angered Nakalanzi, who subsequently threw her nine-month-old son into a pit latrine estimated to be about 50 feet deep.

She allegedly attempted to conceal the incident by claiming that the child’s father had taken the baby and disappeared to an unknown location.

On October 7, at about 3:00pm, Nakalanzi was brought to Kajjansi Police Station by LC1 officials to report the alleged disappearance of her child.

During questioning, she reportedly confessed to having thrown the child into the pit latrine on October 4.

Police Fire Brigade personnel on Thursday morning successfully retrieved the body from the pit latrine.

The body was conveyed to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a post-mortem examination.

Kawala said both suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.

“We strongly condemn such acts of violence and call upon couples and families experiencing domestic grievances to seek peaceful and amicable ways of resolving their differences,” Kawala said.

She urged members of the public to seek assistance from relevant authorities, community leaders or other appropriate support services rather than resorting to violence.

The suspects are expected to appear before court after obtaining advice from the Resident State Attorney.
