The Government has announced a state burial programme for the late Gen. Moses Ali, who passed away on July 18 at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala. Speaking after a Cabinet meeting, Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda said the former First Deputy Prime Minister and veteran statesman will be accorded a state burial in recognition of his distinguished service to Uganda, in line with the 1995 Constitution.
Babalanda said Gen. Moses Ali will be deeply missed by the nation, describing him as a patriotic leader who dedicated his life to serving Uganda. She also confirmed that President Yoweri Museveni has approved full state burial honours.
The Minister revealed that a National Organising Committee, chaired by herself, has been constituted to oversee all burial arrangements.
Cabinet on Monday paid tribute to the late General during a special sitting, while a vigil is scheduled to take place this evening at his home in Naguru, Kampala.
On Tuesday, President Museveni is expected to lead national tributes during a special sitting at Parliament beginning at 9:30 a.m. Members of Parliament will then hold a formal tribute session starting at 10:00 a.m.
At 1:00 p.m., the body of Gen. Moses Ali will be airlifted to Adjumani District ahead of the final burial ceremonies.
On Wednesday, leaders from the West Nile districts will gather at Paridi Stadium to pay their last respects before the burial. Vice President Jessica Alupo is expected to represent the President as the chief mourner at the burial in Adjumani.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) will conduct full military burial honours in recognition of Gen. Moses Ali’s long and distinguished service to the country.
