Nation Media Group (NMG) has been cleared to resume its broadcasting and publishing operations in Uganda after President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni authorized the company’s return, bringing to an end nearly a month of suspended activities.
The development was announced on Tuesday, July 28, in a statement issued by Taifa Group, the majority shareholder of Nation Media Group through its subsidiary, Taarifa Limited.
According to the statement, the resumption of operations follows a series of engagements between the Government of Uganda and Taifa Group. The company described the decision as a significant milestone for regional investment, media development and East African integration.
The reopening paves the way for the return of NMG’s Ugandan media platforms, including Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, The EastAfrican, KFM, Dembe FM, and Enyanda.
Taifa Group Chairman Rostam Aziz welcomed the decision and thanked President Museveni for authorizing the reopening of the media house. He also acknowledged the role played by the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, during the discussions that culminated in the company’s return.
“I wish to express my sincere gratitude to His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for this important decision, and to General Muhoozi Kainerugaba for his support throughout the engagement that led to this positive outcome,” Aziz said.
Aziz reaffirmed Taifa Group’s commitment to responsible investment across East Africa and pledged continued support for independent, balanced and professional journalism in the region.
Nation Media Group Chairman Joe Muganda also welcomed the government’s decision, saying the company’s immediate priority would be to restore its operations and reconnect with audiences, employees and business partners.
“Our immediate priority will be to restore our platforms responsibly, strengthen local content and provide Ugandans with credible, relevant and innovative journalism across print, broadcast and digital channels,” Muganda said.
The statement said the reopening reflects the growing cooperation between Uganda and Tanzania and demonstrates the commitment of governments and the private sector to deepen regional integration, cross-border investment and economic collaboration.
Nation Media Group said it remains committed to serving audiences across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda while expanding regional conversations and contributing to the socio-economic development of East Africa.
Taifa Group, an East African investment company with interests spanning telecommunications, mining, energy, infrastructure, aviation, media, logistics, agriculture and real estate, reiterated its commitment to long-term investments that support regional growth and integration.
