Race for Speakership: opposition elects JEEMA president Asuman Basalirwe to contest against Among

Justice Forum JEEMA president Asuman Basalirwa has been elected by the opposition political parties in parliament to contest against National Resistance Movement NRM’s Anita Annet Among for the position of speaker of Parliament..

Asuman Basalirwa who is also the Bugiri Municipality Member of Parliament, in a secret ballot held on Thursday garnered 49 votes against Eruti county MP’s Jonathan Odur’s who got 20 votes to emerge the winner

Basaalirwa now awaits to battle with the ruling National Resistance Movement’s flag bearer Anita Annet Among in the speakership race on Friday during a special sitting at the Kololo Independence grounds.

The parliament will on Friday sit to vote the next speaker of the 11th parliament following the death of Jacob Oulanyah died on Sunday in Seattle in the USA as stipulated by Article 82(4) of the Constitution of Uganda  that  no business shall be transacted in Parliament other than election to the office of Speaker at any time that office is vacant.
