By Hannah Marion Namukasa

Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) has on Thursday afternoon signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the youth environment advocacy group; My Tree Initiative to advocate and conserve the environment.

While signing the MOU at the UJA Headquarters at Kawempe division, KCCA, the UJA president Mathias Rukundo said as one of the activities to celebrate this year’s World Press Freedom Day journalists have committed to advocate for environmental conservation.

Rukundo asserted that matters of environment and climate should be a concern for everyone since it’s about our own lives thus the journalists will use all the platforms and tools available and accessible to advocate for it and expose those that degrade the environment.

Emmanuel Kirunda, the UJA Secretary General said that the media cannot just look on when the environment is being degraded thus in addition to advocacy they have immediately launched a “One  Million Tree” plantation challenge across the country effective today.

Andrew Mugonza, the vice chairperson of UJA Imitative on the Environment urged government to include environmental education on the study curriculum and also establish environmental information centers.

Mugonza who also appealed to the young people to join the cause said that they will not rest until a revolution of justice to the environment and climate is realized in Uganda.

Enjer Ashraf Dumba, the Executive Director of My Tree Initiative said that their partnership with UJA means that Environment and Climate has got a voice that will reach everyone.

Dumba challenged the public to plant trees since Food, Oxygen, Water and all things that we use in life are purified by trees hence making it very precious and important creature to everyone.
