Uganda establishes three Monkey pox testing centers

By Mukembo Wilfred

The minister of health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng has received 2400 monkey pox test kits from the the world health organisation.

While receiving the kits Dr Aceng said that they tested the first case from South Africa but now that they have been accredited by WHO, they have established three laboratories to carry out the testing which include Uganda virus institute, the national health laboratory services and the department of defence of the US government

Dr. Aceng says that as a country they do not have any confirmed case of monkey pox in the country but said they are on alert since they border countries like DRC which have had monkey pox for over 10yrs, she therefore called for intense surveillance in the country to avoid any risks.

Dr Yonas Waldermaruam, the country representative WHO while handing over the kits applauded Uganda for the good surveillance system. He added that they are going to continue with it to stop any risks.

He says with the kits they are trying to ensure that there is a capacity to identify and manage these cases.
