Bobi Wine Outs Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya’s Tentative Burial Program

By Kabuye Ronald

Kawempe North Member of Parliament, Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, also known as ‘Mr. Update,’ passed away on Thursday, January 9th, 2025, at Lubaga Hospital in Kampala. He was 12:10 pm when he succumbed to his illness despite ongoing medical efforts.

In an official statement, the President and leader of the Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi, confirmed the burial plans, which will take place on Sunday, January 12, 2025, in Masaka District, Uganda.

Kyagulanyi addressed the media shortly after Ssegirinya’s passing, revealing that a vigil will be held today at 4 pm at NUP’s headquarters in Kampala, where party supporters and constituents can pay their final respects. The next day, on Friday, January 10, the late MP will be honored at the Parliament of Uganda, where fellow lawmakers will have the opportunity to bid farewell. This will be followed by prayers in the afternoon at Mbogo Mosque in Kawempe.

Although the Muslim faith typically requires that a deceased person be buried on the same day as their death, Ssegirinya’s family has requested the burial be postponed to Sunday. Kyagulanyi explained that the family made this request to allow relatives traveling from abroad to attend the funeral.

“Ssegirinya was a devoted Muslim, and we respect his faith and traditions. However, his family has requested that we extend the burial to Sunday, as many of his relatives are flying in on Saturday,” Kyagulanyi shared.

On Saturday, January 11, Ssegirinya’s body will be transported to Masaka, where he will be laid to rest on Sunday, January 12, as per the family’s wishes.

At the time of his passing, Hon. Ssegirinya had been under close medical care at Lubaga Hospital. Despite all efforts to save his life, the legislator tragically passed away at 12:10 pm on Thursday.

His untimely death has left many grieving in Uganda, as Ssegirinya was known for his strong commitment to his constituency and activism within the NUP party.
