It starts with a simple plan, a quick boda-boda ride to town, a late-night drive home after a party, or a thrilling joyride with friends. For many young people in Uganda, the road is more than just a way to get from one place to another it’s an adventure, freedom, and lifestyle. But what happens when that thrill turns into tragedy?

Every day, we scroll past social media posts about accidents someone we knew, a friend of a friend, a promising young life cut short. Yet, we rarely pause to ask, what if it were me? What if I could have prevented it?
Did you know that road crashes are one of the leading causes of death among young people in Uganda? According to the Ministry of Works and Transport, over 60% of road accident victims are between the ages of 15 and 35. That means the very people shaping Uganda’s future are the ones most at risk of not living to see it.
Speeding and reckless driving, many young drivers see speed limits as suggestions not rules.
Boda-boda madness, the boda culture is deeply ingrained in Uganda, but so is the habit of riding without helmets or overloading.
Drunk driving and peer pressure, the pressure to impress friends often leads to dangerous decisions.
Ignoring safety gear, Seat belts? Helmets? Reflectors? Many young people still think they are “optional.”
“But I’m a Good Driver…” Until You’re Not

Here’s a fact, Even the best drivers can’t predict the actions of a reckless driver on the road. You may be sober, careful, and skilled but what about the speeding lorry with faulty brakes? The distracted driver texting while overtaking? The reckless boda rider zigzagging through traffic?
Every time you speed, ignore safety precautions, or get on a boda without a helmet, you are placing a bet on your life. And the odds? Not in your Favor.
We need to start changing the Story and here are some of the things that Young Ugandans can Do.
Helmet & Seatbelt Game Strong, Make it a personal rule: no helmet, no ride. No seatbelt, no drive. Simple.
Speak Up! If your friend is driving recklessly, say something. Your voice could save a life.
Respect the Speed Limits, arriving late is better than not arriving at all.
Sober Up Before You Show Up, Alcohol and driving don’t mix. Ever.
Boda Safety First, choose professional riders, wear a helmet, and avoid overloading.
Join the Movement, Road safety isn’t boring. Social media challenges, community awareness campaigns, and advocacy programs make a real difference.
I don’t know if you know but the Future is on the Road, Let’s Keep It Alive
Imagine a Uganda where young people take the lead in road safety. Where wearing a helmet is as normal as carrying a smartphone. Where peer pressure encourages safety, not recklessness. Where we look out for each other because every life matters.
We can be the generation that changes the statistics. But it starts with a choice your choice. Because the next time you get on the road, the most important destination isn’t just where you’re going it’s making sure you get there alive.
Are you ready to be a road safety champion? The journey starts now.
