Hon. Patrick Oshabe Calls on African Union to Act on Early Signs of Conflict in Africa

By Hannah Marion Namukasa

Hon. Patrick Oshabe has called on the African Union (AU) and its peace and security organs to take proactive measures in addressing early warning signs of conflict across the continent. He stressed that, as the continent’s premier body, the AU must demonstrate accountability and clearly outline the steps it is taking to end the fragile and dehumanizing situations in conflict-affected countries — particularly the ongoing crises in Madagascar and Sudan.

Hon. Oshabe urged the AU to intensify its efforts in promoting dialogue, enforcing ceasefires, and restoring constitutional order, warning that such interventions must not be delayed or neglected.

He made the remarks during the Sixth Ordinary Session of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) in Midrand, South Africa, where members are debating the state of peace and security in Africa.

Addressing the issue of youth and the Gen Z generation, Hon. Oshabe highlighted the urgent need to create employment opportunities and genuinely engage with the voices of young people. He noted that Africa’s youth are eager to be heard and to play an active role in shaping the continent’s future.

He further urged the African Union to “step up its game” by identifying and responding promptly to early indicators of unrest — particularly those arising from the frustrations and aspirations of young Africans.
