Residents of Masaka City woke up in shock this morning following the sudden death of Maj. Gen. Deus Sunday, Commander of the Armored Division Brigade based in Kasijjagirwa, Masaka District.
Maj. Gen. Sunday’s passing comes just days after the death of Maj. Gen. Francis Takirwa, the Deputy Commander of the UPDF Land Forces, who died on Saturday at the UPDF National Referral Hospital in Mbuya.
According to his personal assistant, Col. Lubega, Maj. Gen. Sunday left the Kasijjagirwa Barracks on Thursday to attend Tarehe Sita celebrations in Kabale and returned last evening. Upon his return, he picked up his uniform and set off for Kampala to attend the funeral service of Maj. Gen. Takirwa.
Col. Lubega said that when they reached Jalia City in Buwama, Mpigi District, Maj. Gen. Sunday developed breathing complications. He was rushed to Double Cure Clinic for medical attention.
The Acting UPDF spokesperson, Col. Chris Magezi, confirmed that Maj. Gen. Sunday passed away early this morning in Mpigi District. He said the senior officer had been traveling to Kampala for the funeral service of Maj. Gen. Takirwa, scheduled to take place at All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero.
Maj. Gen. Sunday will be remembered in Masaka for his role in overseeing security operations in the Greater Masaka region, including the arrest of opposition members during periods of unrest.
