Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the Deputy Spokesperson of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has appealed for a temporary release from detention following the death of his wife, Edith Mufumbiro Katende.
After visiting him in prison, NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya described the situation as “deeply distressing,” explaining that Mufumbiro is overwhelmed with grief and troubled by the fact that he was unable to be with his wife during her final moments.

Rubongoya, together with family representative Kato Mufumbiro, stated that Mufumbiro remains in custody despite asserting his innocence, arguing that his arrest is politically driven.
“This is part of a broader effort to undermine the opposition. Mufumbiro was not at Kavule on February 12, 2025, and did not take part in that birthday parade,” Rubongoya said.
Opposition members maintain that Mufumbiro was not at the location of the alleged incident at the time of his arrest, insisting he was instead attending to his wife at a cancer treatment center.
His lawyers have since petitioned the Chief Justice, seeking at least a temporary release so he can attend his wife’s burial.
