Three URA Officials Killed After Vehicle Hits Elephant in Murchison Falls National Park

By Robert Segawa

Three employees of the Uganda Revenue Authority died after the vehicle they were traveling in, registration number UA 20122AA, collided with a crossing elephant near Karuma.

The crash occurred on the night of May 24, 2026, at around 8:00 p.m. along the Arua Road within Murchison Falls National Park in Nwoya District.

According to preliminary investigations, the driver of the Toyota Hiace, which was carrying seven URA officials returning to Kampala from official duty in Arua City, knocked a crossing elephant and subsequently lost control of the vehicle.

The elephant reportedly got up after the collision and, in apparent aggression, began smashing and rolling the vehicle.

Three occupants died on the spot, while four others, including the driver, sustained serious injuries.

According to Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for Traffic and Road Safety, police responded promptly and rushed the injured victims to Kiryandongo Hospital for treatment before they were later transferred to Kampala for further medical management.

He added that the bodies of the deceased were taken to Anaka Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examinations.

Kananura urged motorists to exercise extreme caution while driving through national parks and wildlife-protected areas, especially at night, and to strictly observe speed limits to avoid such incidents.
