Minister for Local Government Hon. Balaam Barugahara has ordered the arrest of Iganga Municipal Town Clerk Edith Turyasasira over alleged failure to take action against encroachment on municipal land and wetlands.
The directive was issued during Balaam’s visit to Iganga as part of his ongoing anti-corruption and service-delivery campaign.
According to Balaam, the Town Clerk had been notified about cases of encroachment on municipal land and wetlands but allegedly failed to take appropriate action.
The minister questioned why action had not been taken despite the authorities being informed about the alleged encroachment.
Balaam directed the relevant security and investigative authorities to arrest and investigate Turyasasira over her alleged failure to protect municipal assets and respond to reports of encroachment.
The minister said government land and wetlands must be protected from individuals who illegally occupy or acquire public resources.
The directive comes amid a wider anti-corruption crackdown in Iganga, where Balaam has ordered investigations and action against officials accused of mismanaging or facilitating the loss of public land and other government assets.
Turyasasira will be subject to due process, and the allegations against her will have to be established through investigations and, where applicable, court proceedings.
