Three people have died and six others sustained injuries in a fire incident that occurred early Monday morning in Nansana West Zone I, Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District.
The deceased have been identified as Burali Isabirye, Namulondo Annet and Nanyombi Violent, all residents of the area.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, while addressing journalists at Police Headquarters in Naguru on Monday morning, said preliminary investigations indicate that the fire was deliberately set by the landlady, who is also believed to have died in the inferno.
Rusoke said the bodies were burnt beyond recognition and will require DNA testing to establish their identities.
According to police, the landlady first rescued a child and removed some property from the building before allegedly setting it ablaze.
Police said a note found at the scene indicates that the landlady may have been responsible for starting the fire.
“This is an unfortunate situation and beyond control. People should share their challenges with others so that they can be helped and saved,” Rusoke said.
The bodies have been taken to the City Mortuary at Mulago for postmortem, while the injured victims are receiving treatment at Kirudu Hospital.
Nansana West Zone I Chairperson George William Mukibi said residents commonly knew the owner of the burnt facility as Miriam.
Mukibi added that the note found in a bag next to the child appeared to be a will in which the deceased outlined how she wanted her property distributed.
