UJA Condemns Brutal Attack on Journalist Kibwiika, Demands Immediate Action to Protect Press Freedom

By Hannah Marion Namukasa

In a shocking turn of events, Steven Kibwiika, a journalist with Spark TV under the Nation Media Group (NMG), was brutally attacked by security operatives today in Namere, Kawempe North, while filming footage for a news story related to allegations of pre-ticking of ballot papers ahead of tomorrow’s parliamentary by-election. The assault occurred as Kibwiika was gathering evidence for his report, focusing on the questionable electoral practices that have stirred public concern.

The journalist was quickly rushed to a health facility in Kampala, where he is receiving urgent medical care. Reports confirm that Kibwiika is still hospitalized due to the severity of his injuries.

This marks the second time in less than two weeks that Kibwiika has been targeted. On March 4th, he was viciously beaten by police officers in Wandegeya while covering another story, sparking widespread condemnation.

The Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) has strongly condemned the escalating violence against journalists, calling it a blatant act of impunity. “Such criminal acts against journalists must stop,” the UJA stated in a statement, emphasizing that these repeated attacks undermine press freedom and safety.

The association also noted that they have been documenting all instances of violations to gather solid evidence, intending to hold perpetrators accountable in court. “Violence against journalists is unacceptable. Journalism is not a crime,” the UJA declared.

The attack on Kibwiika highlights the growing threats journalists face in the line of duty, and it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding press freedom in Uganda.
