The Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU), headed by Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahirwa, has issued an immediate ban on the use of solar and electric pressure lamps by silver fish dealers during night fishing.

The directive followed a meeting held yesterday evening with fishermen in Kigungu, Entebbe Municipality, where Nile perch dealers expressed concern that the electric lamps used by silver fish operators were driving Nile perch away from their nets, ultimately reducing their catch and income.

Fishermen from Entebbe Municipality and the wider Wakiso District convened at Entebbe Girls’ playground for a consultative meeting with the FPU. The session aimed to update them on government efforts to improve the fishing industry and upcoming interventions.

Nile perch fishermen argued that the bright lamps used by silver fish dealers at night disrupt fish movement patterns, making it harder for them to trap Nile perch. In response, Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahirwa ordered all silver fish dealers to stop using electric lamps immediately, warning that anyone who defies the directive will face consequences.

During the meeting, fishermen also expressed their support for the NRM government, adopting the slogan “Bavubi ku Museveni” as they pledged loyalty to Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni ahead of the upcoming elections.
