Katabi Council Tasks MP Kenan Opio Over Poor Roads, Health Services

By Namuli N. Racheal

The Katabi Town Council leadership has tasked Busiro South Member of Parliament Hon. Kenan Opio with pushing for the improvement of poor roads and healthcare services in the area.

The council particularly wants urgent intervention on Kasenyi Road, which residents and leaders have repeatedly raised concerns about due to its poor condition.

During a council sitting chaired by Councillor Senoga at the town council offices, members resolved that Wakiso District should write to the Ministry of Works and Transport requesting it to take over Kasenyi Road and facilitate its upgrade.

The councillors said the road has remained in poor condition for a long time despite repeated calls for its rehabilitation.

The council also raised concern over the lack of a Health Centre III in the area, saying the growing population requires better access to healthcare services.

Responding to the concerns, MP Kenan Opio said he would raise the matter on the floor of Parliament and advocate for Kasenyi Road to be brought under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area road network to facilitate its upgrading.

On the proposed Health Centre III, Opio asked Katabi Town Council to identify and secure suitable land where the facility can be constructed.

He assured the council that once land is secured, he would work with relevant authorities to ensure the health facility is established.

Katabi Town Council has a population of more than 200,000 people and has more than three government primary schools but only one secondary school, which is reportedly operating at full capacity.

The council also faces a persistent garbage disposal challenge, with residents reportedly dumping waste in trenches and other undesignated areas in trading centres such as Abaita Ababiri.

Council leaders said the town council is yet to identify and engage enough garbage collectors to ensure proper waste management and prevent the accumulation of rubbish in the area.

The leaders called for concerted efforts by the town council, district authorities and central government to address the challenges affecting service delivery in Katabi.
