WFP country director Maygag visits Karamoja, calls for more funding of community based programs

After a long period of the World food program assisting Uganda in feeding school going children and supporting refugee camps especially in the northern areas, it started up the community based programs aimed at involving local people in programs that contributes to their livelihood.

These project by world food program started in the 1980’s and has continually grown to cover most districts in the region.

On his visit to Karamoja region, the WFP country director  Abdirahman Meygag who was impressed by the great work pledged to continue supporting  the programs that benefit in terms of improving their livelihood and eradication of malnutrition in the region.

WFP introduced, The Together Effort  in the region which aims at introducing community based programs that are sustainable and cheap to be adopted by the local people in fighting malnutrition cases.

For many years WFP has been importing nutritious foods that they always distribute to malnourished children in the region however according to the new country director this has not impacted well thus the introduction of the Together Effort which they believe will be a solution to malnutrition

According to Dr Robert Armah, the head of Nutrition programs with WFP reveals that as a result of covid 19, stunting rates have increased thus the much needed efforts of the WFP and partners to bring down the rates.

In the Together Efforts, Vegetable growing and fish farming are provided by Andre food internation (AFI) through the support of wfp is one of the succeeding project introduced in the project. This kind of farming has been embraced by the Karamojongs and has greatly changed their lives.

World food program which has been at the forefront of such programs which have benefited more than 130,000 recipients in an effort of strengthening government’s health system to ensure that children receive high quality health and nutrition services for better nourishment.
