There is sigh of new hope for Karamoja as Karenga district displays over 3000 acres of ready to harvest maize gardens in response to Buy Karamoja Feed Karamoja World Food Program (WFP) project aimed at fighting food insecurity in the region.
It should be recalled that on 14th April, 2021, all the 10 districts leaders that make up Karamoja region and various ministries including ministry of Education ,karamoja affairs and Agriculture held a meeting in Namaru, Nakapiripiliti district with World Food Program (WFP) and other development partners like Andre food international (AFI) to draw strategies on how best Karamoja districts can get involved in serious farming that will enable WFP stop buying food from other parts of the country and abroad to feed schools in the same region.

The meeting yielded into a memorandum of understanding signed by all partners committing to respond positively hence Karenga district taking lead in the market of supplying maize grains to WFP.
Among the top fertile districts of Karamoja that committed include karenga that was represented by its chief Administrative officer mukose jonathan and lc 5 chairman Lochali filex mark
In abide to fulfill its commitment made on 14th April 2021, Karenga managed to organize over 100 farmer groups in the district who cultivated over 3000 acres of maize gardens.

Alfred opulo an officer from Karenga district said, they have already reached the set metric tons target set by world food program to each district towards the program
Mukose Jonathan the chief Administrative officer for karenga district said that their target is now beyond WFP market since they are hoping to extend their market to southern Sudan
In the previous supply, kabong women farmers association took the lead after supplying WFP with 352 Metric tons of maize grains scoping a check of 457,600,000/=
The karamoja region is mostly affected by climate change and drought, which is the major cause of soil depletion, environmental degradation, and poor harvests. Unlike other regions, Karamoja has only one season.
