Why Buganda Kingdom has halted celebrations of Kabaka’s birthday

By Kabuye Ronald

The Katikiro (prime minister) of Buganda Kingdom Charles Peter Mayiga has announced that Kingdom has temporarily halted all celebrations to mark the 67th birthday of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II will turn 67 years tomorrow Wednesday, April 13, 2022.

Addressing journalists at Bulange Mengo, the katitkiro Charles Peter Mayiga gave the reasons for the halting of the celebrations.

“The 13th of April will be the Kabaka’s birthday, he will be turning 67 years. The Sunday preceding of the Kabaka’s birthday is when we have the Kabaka’s birthday run. One, we weren’t able to run (on Sunday) for two reasons; one, the (birthday run) kit, while it has been delivered in Uganda, it is still at the customs department, our partners are working on the modalities to have the kit released. Secondly, the Kabaka is out of the country. As you know, he flags us off, so for those two reasons, we did not run,” Mayiga added.

Katikkiro, however said that they hope to hold the celebration in the coming month of May.

On March 29, Katikkiro Mayiga revealed that His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi had traveled to Europe and he is currently traversing various countries including Netherlands, UK and German.

The main reason of the Kabaka’s trip is to lure some European investors to invest in Uganda especially in Buganda Kingdom and also to see his medical doctors.
