World Heart Day: 25% of Ugandans are battling cardiovascular diseases

Uganda has on Thursday joined the rest of the world to commemorate world heart day under the world theme “Use Heart for Evert Heart”.

World Heart Day is observed every year on September 29 with an objective to raise awareness about the rising concerns of heart health and cardiovascular diseases and ways to prevent and treat the same.

Addressing the journalists at Uganda Media Center Kampala, the commissioner for maternal and child health in the ministry of health Dr. Jesca Nsungwa Sabiiti noted that globally, nearly 18.6 million people died of cardiovascular disease in 2019, the latest year for which worldwide statistics are calculated that reflects a 17.1% increase over the past decade, and there were more than 523.2 million cases of cardiovascular disease in 2019, an increase of 26.6% compared with 2010.

She says 25% of Ugandans are living with cardiovascular diseases but are not aware thus puts their lives at stake. However she has disclosed that the government approved USD70m to construction a fully cardiovascular hospital at Naguru Nakawa division Kampala to curb down the problem.

Meanwhile Dr. Lameck Ssemwogere consultant intensives at Uganda heart institute says, the institute does the needful  and deserves a credit because currently, they treat 95% of adults and 85% of children of cardiovascular diseases.
