Nansubuga Babirye Jamilah is on the run after narrowly escaping an angry mob in Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District, on 2nd, May, 2024. She was allegedly caught by her husband, Kazibwe Umar, in an intimate lesbian encounter with another woman, identified only as Hadijah, in their marital bedroom.

According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation occurred when Kazibwe returned home unexpectedly and found the two women engaged in what he described as a “forbidden sexual act.” After thoroughly beating the wife, he raised an alarm, drawing the attention of neighbours who quickly gathered, incensed by the incident. The two women managed to escape before the crowd could intervene further.
Kazibwe, visibly emotional, told the crowd that he had long suspected his wife of infidelity and of being involved in same-sex relationships {homosexuality}. He claimed his suspicions were based on her repeated refusal to engage in marital relations and reports from their maid, who alleged that Jamilah and female visitors often locked themselves in the bedroom and engaged in lesbianism.
He further claimed to have physically assaulted Jamilah before she fled, expressing anger over her supposed pregnancy. “She has been telling me she is pregnant, but I pray she loses that baby. I cannot father a child with a woman who engages in homosexual acts,” Kazibwe told the residents.

Following the incident, residents escorted Kazibwe to Kyengera Police Station, where a case was filed under Uganda’s anti-homosexuality laws. Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that they are actively searching for the suspects.
It should be noted that under Section 145 of Uganda’s Penal Code Act (Cap 120), same-sex acts are considered “unnatural offences” and carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. In the same way, the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023, imposes severe penalties for individuals involved in or promoting homosexuality in Uganda. The restrictive anti- homosexual law has tough punishments and fines for those convicted of promoting, recruiting, practicing homosexuality or lesbianism, aiding, harboring and staying with homosexuals in Uganda. The law also provides for a life sentence in prison for an individual convicted of same-sex acts in the country.
Authorities have urged the public to refrain from mob justice and instead report such matters to the relevant law enforcement agencies.
