UPC Calls for Investigation into Kigoogwa Fuel Tank Tragedy that Claimed 11 Lives

By Jumah Kakomo

The Opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) Party is demanding an immediate investigation into the tragic fuel tank explosion that occurred on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at Kigoogwa along the Kampala-Bombo road. The incident resulted in the loss of 11 lives and left several others injured.

In a press briefing on Wednesday, party spokesperson Arach Oyat Sharon emphasized the urgent need for authorities to ascertain the cause of the accident and hold those responsible accountable. She expressed deep concern for the victims’ families, urging the government to provide compensation for their loss.

“The government must take responsibility for the safety of its citizens. We cannot continue to lose precious lives due to negligence and lack of oversight,” Sharon stated, highlighting the pressing need for improved safety measures to prevent future tragedies.

The fuel tanker explosion has reverberated throughout the community, prompting widespread calls for enhanced safety protocols in the transportation of hazardous materials.

Faizo Muzeyi, UPC’s head of media and communications

Faizo Muzeyi, UPC’s head of media and communications, criticized the local leadership and police for failing to adequately secure the accident site. He insisted that immediate action should have been taken to cordon off the area and prevent public access, allowing rapid response units from police and other security agencies to effectively manage the situation.

As investigations are expected to unfold, the UPC’s calls for accountability and enhanced safety measures reflect a growing frustration among citizens seeking assurance that such a devastating event will not recur.
