The Traffic and Road Safety Directorate has revealed a concerning rise in hit-and-run accidents, with a total of 1,173 such incidents reported between January and June this year. The alarming figures come amid heightened awareness following a suspected mob murder case in Namuwongo, Kiira Division, Wakiso District, where an unidentified man was killed in a hit-and-run incident.

In a press briefing today at Naguru, Traffic Police spokesperson, Michael Kananura, confirmed that CCTV footage showed the victim was struck by a speeding motorcycle, which ran over him, causing instant death. Kananura emphasized that police are actively working to identify the motorist involved in the incident and called on all drivers to come forward if they are involved in any accidents.
“Hit-and-run accidents are now the third most common cause of fatal crashes on our roads, following speeding and unsafe overtaking. These accidents are a significant danger to all road users,” Kananura stated, urging greater accountability among motorists.
He also addressed the growing concerns over reckless cycling and motorbike riding, particularly in cases where riders attempt to flee the scene after causing accidents. He urged cyclists to avoid resorting to violence or mob justice, emphasizing the importance of helping victims rather than contributing to chaos.

Kananura reminded all motorists of their legal obligation to report any accident to the police within 24 hours. “Failing to do so can only worsen the situation, both legally and socially,” he said.
As part of the weekly road safety report, Kananura confirmed that 28 riders, 4 passengers, and 23 motor vehicle passengers lost their lives in accidents this past week alone, underscoring the urgent need for improved road safety measures and responsible driving.
The police spokesperson reiterated that authorities are working to enhance road safety enforcement and urged the public to remain vigilant in reporting accidents and observing traffic laws for the safety of everyone on the road.
