Police to Detain Reckless Motorists for Entire Festive Season

By Robert Segawa

The Uganda Police Force has issued a stern warning to motorists this festive season, announcing that those caught violating traffic guidelines will face detention beyond the usual 48-hour period due to court closures during the holidays. The move aims to curb the rise in road accidents and traffic congestion typically seen during this busy travel period.

Kituuma Rusoke, the Police Spokesperson, confirmed that all motorists arrested for offenses, including driving without permits, operating vehicles in dangerous mechanical conditions, driving under the influence of alcohol, or speeding, will be detained until the end of the festive season. He emphasized that suspects would not be allowed to make phone calls to influential individuals for help but would be held accountable and processed through the appropriate legal channels.

“We won’t allow suspects to take phone calls for help to big people in the country, but to only be arrested and detained,” Kituuma stated. “This is a time for safety on our roads, and we are taking a zero-tolerance approach to ensure that people adhere to traffic regulations.”

In preparation for the increased traffic and potential violations, the police have already set up snap checks and checkpoints on major highways and roads across the country. Officers are particularly focusing on motorists who are driving without valid driving permits, those with unroadworthy vehicles, and drivers under the influence of alcohol. Additionally, speeding will be closely monitored, with penalties for offenders expected to be strictly enforced.

Traffic and road safety spokesperson Michael Kananura revealed that, during a recent operation targeting bus drivers, 76 drivers were arrested for various offenses. He highlighted the importance of these operations in maintaining safety, as last year saw a disturbing rise in fatalities during the festive period.

“Between December 23, 2023, and January 1, 2024, we recorded 60 deaths due to road accidents. We cannot afford to repeat this,” Kananura warned.

He also cautioned against the use of school buses for transporting passengers during the holidays, stressing that these vehicles are not meant for public transport and can be unsafe when used for such purposes.

The police are urging all motorists to exercise caution and follow traffic regulations to prevent accidents and ensure a safe and enjoyable festive season for all Ugandans. With the increased deployment of officers and heightened surveillance, the police are determined to maintain order on the roads throughout the holidays.
