Security agencies, in coordination with event organizers, have suspended all business activities typically conducted in front of the Namugongo Martyrs Shrines before and during the annual Martyrs’ Day celebrations on June 3.

The move is intended to ensure peace and smooth movement of pilgrims and visitors before, during, and after the celebrations. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Christopher Barugahare representing the Director of Operations of the Uganda Police at a preparatory meeting held at Namugongo Catholic Shrines the decision follows years of congestion and security risks associated with vending in the area.
“These business activities have always caused disruption to the movement of both people and vehicles, posing a threat to public safety,” Barugahare stated. “This year, we have resolved to keep the area in front of the shrines completely clear to ensure order and reduce noise pollution during prayers.”
Barugahare also appealed to the Kiira Municipality authorities not to collect any revenue or issue permits for vending in front of the shrine, warning that any vendors who pay for these spaces will likely be disappointed.

“There will be heavy deployment, and anyone operating in violation of this directive will be dealt with accordingly,” he warned.
Additionally, the Uganda Police urged Kiira Municipality to designate an alternative area for vendors to operate from, allowing business to continue without compromising security at the shrine.
ACP Barugahare concluded with a stern warning to criminal elements suspected of planning disruptions during the event, assuring the public that any such attempts will be met with firm and decisive action.
