By Jumah Kakomo

The government of the republic of Uganda has applauded Junior Achievement (JA) Uganda for its outstanding efforts in promoting environmental conservation and creating job opportunities among the youth.

While delivering his remarks during this year’ exhibition and celebration ceremony, on Thursday in Kampala, where they awarded the best company for its contributions to the education sector, the Assistant Commissioner for Private Schools and Institutions in the ministry of education, George Mutekanga, commended the organization for its innovative approach to entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and work readiness programs.

“JA Uganda has demonstrated a strong commitment to empowering young people with the skills and knowledge required to succeed in today’s fast-paced and competitive world,” Mutekanga said.

He highlighted JA Uganda’s environmental conservation initiatives, such as promoting recycling and sustainable practices among students, as a testament to the organization’s dedication to creating a better future for all.

“By teaching young people the importance of environmental conservation and entrepreneurship, JA Uganda is playing a vital role in shaping the next generation of leaders and change-makers,” Mutekanga added.

Junior Achievement (JA) Uganda is a non-profit organization that focuses on preparing and empowering youth for the future of work through various programs.

JA Uganda’s Executive Director, Rachael Mwagale, expressed her gratitude to the Ministry of Education and Sports for recognizing their efforts. She added that the recognition reinforces JA Uganda’s mission to continue providing high-quality programs that prepare young people for success in their careers and personal lives while contributing to the development of their communities.

Mwagale praised the government for its previous support, which has enabled JA Uganda to reach students in various schools across the country. However, she noted that there is still a significant gap in terms of resources and funding, which is hindering the organization’s ability to expand its programs to reach more young people between 13-19 years of age, particularly in rural areas.

“We believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or location,” Mwagale said.

“We urge the government to continue supporting us so that we can continue to provide high-quality programs that prepare young people for success in their careers and personal lives.” She added

Mwagale emphasized that JA Uganda’s programs are aligned with the government’s priorities, including the Skilling Uganda strategy and the National Development Plan.

Mwagale also appealed to the private sector and development partners to support JA Uganda’s mission, noting that every shilling counts in making a difference in the lives of young people. According to Mwagale, Junior Achievement (JA) Uganda has also helped to conserve the environment through its programs in the following ways:

1. Environmental Education: JA Uganda has incorporated environmental education into its programs, teaching students about the importance of conservation, sustainability, and responsible resource management.

2. Recycling and Waste Management: JA Uganda has implemented recycling programs in schools, encouraging students to recycle paper, plastic, and other materials, reducing waste and promoting sustainable practices.

3. Sustainable Entrepreneurship: JA Uganda’s entrepreneurship programs encourage students to develop sustainable business ideas that promote environmental conservation, such as eco-friendly products and services.

4. Community Service Projects: JA Uganda’s students have implemented community service projects focused on environmental conservation, such as tree planting, cleaning water sources, and promoting energy efficiency.

5. Collaboration with Environmental Organizations: JA Uganda has partnered with environmental organizations to provide students with hands-on experience in conservation efforts, such as wildlife conservation and habitat restoration.

6. Environmental Awareness Campaigns: JA Uganda has organized environmental awareness campaigns, educating students and communities about the importance of conservation and sustainable practices.

“By incorporating environmental education and conservation into its programs, JA Uganda has empowered young people to become environmentally conscious leaders and entrepreneurs, contributing to a sustainable future for Uganda,”Mwagale stated.

Mwagale embraces the new curriculum which she asserts is a game-changer for Uganda’s education system adding that by emphasizing practical skills, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy, the government is preparing the young people for the challenges of the 21st century.

“This curriculum will equip them with the skills and mindset needed to succeed in an increasingly complex and competitive world,” Mwagale added.
