Poor Visibility Blamed for 18 Road Deaths Recorded Last Week- Police

By Robert Segawa

The Traffic and Road Safety Directorate has attributed most of the fatal road crashes recorded last week to poor visibility during night driving.

According to the Directorate, 18 people died in fatal road accidents last week, while 17 others sustained serious injuries.

Addressing journalists at Naguru today, Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura said most of the crashes were caused by poor visibility at night, glare from oncoming vehicle headlights, driver fatigue, poor concentration and dangerous overtaking.

Among the fatal crashes was an accident at Namulanda along the Entebbe Expressway, in which two staff members of Next Media died on the spot. Police said the driver alleged to have caused the crash is still at large.

Kananura also reported a separate crash at Kabuwunga in Lwera, Kalungu District, in which 13 people travelling in a drone died. Four others sustained serious injuries.

The driver of the Sinotruk involved in the crash, Kiyega Ibra Mukasa, who was also injured, was admitted to hospital. Police said he is expected to appear in court today and face 16 counts related to causing death and bodily injuries.

Another fatal crash occurred at Kakira along the Iganga-Jinja Highway, where a speeding taxi travelling at night reportedly rammed into another vehicle from behind. Three people died on the spot, while 10 others were injured.

Kananura further reported a crash at Kamengo along the Masaka Highway, involving a Global Bus driven by Ssejuko Patrick and a Sinotruk. The accident occurred when the bus was reportedly overtaking.

Ssejuko, who is under police guard, is expected to appear in court on charges of causing bodily injuries, while the driver of the Sinotruk is receiving medical treatment.

Kananura urged all motorists to observe traffic laws, exercise caution on the roads and avoid dangerous practices that could lead to loss of lives and serious injuries.
