Retired Major General Gregory Mugisha Muntu Oyera, the flag bearer for the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), has officially been nominated today to contest in Uganda’s 2026 general elections, becoming the fifth presidential aspirant to be duly nominated by the Electoral Commission.

In his post-nomination address, Muntu struck a firm but composed tone, calling on Ugandans to pursue peaceful democratic change through the ballot box.
“Retire Gen Museveni in a peaceful way because he cannot take this country further,” Muntu urged.
The seasoned opposition leader took direct aim at the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), accusing it of undermining national development through poor governance, weak institutions, and a dangerous culture of impunity.

Upon his arrival at the Electoral Commission headquarters, Muntu made a lighthearted yet pointed observation about the heavy presence of President Museveni’s campaign posters, quipping, “Should we also bring our own posters to balance the space?”
The former army commander’s remarks were not short of hard-hitting criticism, especially regarding the use of state security apparatus to suppress political dissent.

Muntu decried the continued detention of opposition figures, specifically naming Dr. Kizza Besigye and supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP). He questioned the legality and fairness of their prolonged incarceration: “If there is credible evidence, take it to court. Otherwise, this is political persecution.”
This marks Muntu’s second attempt at Uganda’s top office, following his 2021 bid. A known advocate for institutional reform, national unity, and disciplined leadership, Muntu’s platform continues to focus on building systems over strongmen.
With the 2026 race taking shape, his message to Ugandans is clear: it’s time for a new era, not by force, but by peaceful and democratic means.
