Security Guard Arrested After Allegedly Fatally Stabbing Hawker to Death

By Robert Segawa

Traders at BMK Plaza along Ben Kiwanuka Street in Kampala’s Central Business District were left in shock after a security guard allegedly stabbed a hawker to death during a confrontation on Thursday evening.

The incident occurred on the ground floor of BMK Plaza when Mugisha Ian, a security guard attached to Security 2000, reportedly confronted the hawker for selling merchandise inside the arcade. According to eyewitnesses, the guard ordered the hawker to turn back and attempted to forcefully remove him from the premises, but the hawker resisted.

Witnesses said the confrontation escalated into a physical fight, during which the security guard allegedly stabbed the hawker in the left side of the chest. The victim collapsed in the corridor and was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said Central Police Station registered a murder case under SD Ref. 68/10/07/2026.

He said Scene of Crime officers processed and documented the scene and recorded statements from eyewitnesses to support ongoing investigations. The suspected murder weapon was recovered from the scene.

The suspect, Mugisha, was arrested and is being held at Central Police Station pending guidance from the Resident State Attorney.

Owoyesigyire said police found the body of an unidentified adult male, believed to be about 28 years old, lying on his back in a corridor on the ground floor of BMK Plaza, in front of Shop G023, in a pool of blood.

The deceased was dressed in blue jeans and a grey hooded long-sleeved T-shirt and had a maroon scarf placed over his chest. A shopping bag containing wipes and pant liners was found beside the body.

A physical examination revealed a fresh stab wound on the upper left side of the chest.

The body was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Police said they are also reviewing CCTV footage from the building to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether the fatal confrontation was captured on camera.
