Train Crashes into School Bus in Mukono, Three Dead, Several Students Injured

By Robert Segawa

Several students of Mwebaze High School in Kakiri, Wakiso District, are nursing injuries following a tragic collision between a train and a school bus at Namumira Village in Kyetume Sub-county, Mukono District.

The accident occurred at around 6:45 a.m. on Friday along the Katosi Road railway crossing. Two students and a female teacher died at the scene.

Preliminary police findings indicate that the students were travelling in a school bus, registration number UAU 123Q, which had left the school early in the morning for an educational trip to Jinja District.

According to eyewitnesses, the bus driver was allegedly overspeeding and failed to stop at the railway crossing before the train struck the bus, causing it to overturn and leaving several students injured.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said police officers, working alongside other emergency responders, have evacuated the injured students to Mukono General Referral Hospital and other nearby health facilities for treatment.

Kawala added that police have secured the scene and commenced investigations to establish the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the crash.

The bus driver reportedly fled the scene after the accident. Police have launched a manhunt to arrest him to assist with the ongoing investigations.

The bodies of the deceased have been transported to Mulago National Referral Hospital for postmortem examinations.
