The Uganda Police Force has detained Sheikh Mohammed Uthman, a 53-year-old witch doctor, in connection with the alleged defilement of a 12-year-old girl from Esteem Nursery and Primary School in Galuwero Town Council, Luwero District.

According to reports, the victim’s grandmother had sought Uthman’s help after the minor fell ill with an unspecified illness. Over the course of six days, the grandmother brought the girl to Uthman’s shrine, where the witch doctor was said to administer local herbs as part of a treatment ritual.
It is alleged that Uthman took advantage of the situation, promising to use the herbs to treat the girl’s private parts. On the sixth day, it is claimed that he sexually assaulted her.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke stated that the girl managed to disclose the abuse to her grandmother. However, the grandmother reportedly downplayed the severity of the situation. The victim, determined to seek justice, eventually confided in her school head teacher. The head teacher then informed the girl’s father, who promptly reported the incident to the police, leading to Uthman’s arrest.

Rusoke emphasized the importance of vigilance among parents and guardians, particularly with regards to the safety of young girls. He highlighted the dangers of entrusting minors to unfamiliar individuals or sending them to places where they may be exposed to harm, such as barbershops or shops with strangers.
“The safety of our children must be a top priority,” Rusoke urged. “Parents should be cautious and ensure they are aware of whom their children are interacting with to prevent such unfortunate incidents.”
Sheikh Mohammed Uthman remains in police custody as investigations continue into the alleged abuse.
