30 Arrested as Police Recover Over 300 Suspected Stolen Phones in Kampala CBD Crackdown

By Robert Segawa

Kampala Metropolitan Police have intensified operations to crack down on mobile phone snatching in Kampala’s Central Business District following growing public outcry over the rising cases of theft.

The operation, which targeted Cooper Complex and nearby outlets, led to the recovery of more than 300 suspected stolen mobile phones.

Police say many members of the public have fallen victim to phone snatchers who also steal bags and important documents, particularly during evening traffic jams around Clock Tower, Queens Way, Lugogo traffic lights, and other parts of Kampala.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the operation followed intelligence reports indicating that Cooper Complex had become a hub for individuals involved in the theft and sale of suspected stolen mobile phones.

During the operation, police recovered more than 300 suspected stolen mobile phones and arrested 30 suspects, who are currently in custody to assist with ongoing investigations.

The recovered phones have been secured pending verification of ownership.

Owoyesigyire said police will record statements from the suspects and other relevant witnesses before charging and prosecuting those against whom sufficient evidence is established.

He added that the operation is part of the Uganda Police Force’s ongoing efforts to combat the growing problem of mobile phone theft and the illegal trade in suspected stolen property.

Police have urged members of the public who have lost their mobile phones to cooperate with investigators during the verification process once the identification of rightful owners begins.
