The Flying Squad Department of Police has successfully rescued a South African national, Amos Masoga Morubura, who had been kidnapped and tortured by suspects demanding a ransom. Morubura, a 40-year-old Uber operator from South Africa, was abducted on July 31, 2024, while visiting Uganda and staying in Badongo Zone, Makindye Division, Kampala District.

The distressing incident came to light through a video that circulated on social media, showing Morubura in captivity and pleading for help. The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of 100,000 South African Rand, equivalent to approximately 24,664,000 Ugandan Shillings, from Morubura’s family in South Africa.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesman, Morubura had arrived in Uganda on May 28, 2024, and was staying with friends. The kidnapping followed a confrontation with his Ugandan friend, Peter Mulondo, and an accomplice named Elijah, over unauthorized withdrawals from his bank account. The altercation allegedly led to Morubura’s abduction as he was en route to the airport.
The Flying Squad team, after receiving information from Morubura’s brother in South Africa, traced the victim to a house in Badongo. Upon rescue, Morubura was found tied up and showing signs of torture. He was subsequently taken to Katwe Police Station for a statement and medical evaluation.

The suspects, identified as Mulondo and Elijah, are currently on the run, and police are actively pursuing them. The Flying Squad’s prompt action was crucial in saving Morubura and thwarting the kidnappers’ demands.
Owoyesigyire commended the Flying Squad officers for their swift response and successful rescue operation. “We are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensuring the safety of all individuals in our jurisdiction,” he stated.
Police continue their efforts to locate and apprehend the suspects, while Morubura’s family and the authorities in South Africa have been informed of the developments.
