The Uganda Police Force has strongly condemned acts of violence and hooliganism allegedly committed by supporters of various presidential candidates, particularly those affiliated with the National Unity Platform (NUP).
The warning follows several incidents recorded in areas being visited by presidential candidates ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Addressing an emergency press conference at the Naguru Police Headquarters this morning, Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke cited a recent incident in Lira District near Oboti Primary School, where a group of alleged NUP foot soldiers reportedly attacked a security vehicle, registration number UBK 380Q.
According to Rusoke, the attackers deflated all four tyres, stole a laptop and two jerrycans of fuel, and destroyed the car keys. They reportedly claimed the security vehicle was carrying an electronic jammer — an accusation police have dismissed as false.

The suspects, who were travelling in a Toyota Hiace registration number UA 933AU, were intercepted and arrested. Rusoke identified them as Ssembusi Precious Paul, Bukenya Ismail, Lokolo Liberty, Nakabuye Mastulah, Waiswa Raston, Nasozi Hope, Saliman Kaggwa, Kamulegeya Reagan, Kanamba Steven, and Lubega Arison.
Rusoke further revealed that police have recorded additional cases of assault and malicious damage to property involving political supporters. These include incidents in Mayuge, where a police officer was attacked and his phone stolen; in Kyankwanzi, where a detective constable was assaulted at Bikoma Primary School; and in Kakumiro District, where a police vehicle (UP 7694) was vandalized. Another similar assault was reported in Busia District.
He also confirmed that the police officer captured in a viral video headbutting a NUP supporter is under investigation.
Rusoke cautioned supporters who provoke security officers, saying police will not disperse crowds with teargas but will instead “deal with specific individuals who engage in acts of violence or assault officers.”
Despite these isolated incidents, Rusoke noted that the presidential campaigns have generally proceeded smoothly over the past four weeks.
