Mengo Applauds DF for Embracing Buganda’s Aspirations, Warns Leaders Against Undermining Kabaka

The Kingdom of Buganda has hailed the Democratic Front (DF) Party for openly acknowledging the kingdom’s aspirations and committing to integrate them into its political agenda.

Addressing DF party leaders and flag bearers at Bulange Mengo, the Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, outlined the core pillars of Buganda’s aspirations: promoting cultural heritage, protecting the Kabaka, pushing for a federal system of governance, safeguarding land and territorial integrity, creating jobs, developing talent, and strengthening unity among the people.

Despite DF being a relatively new party, the Katikkiro noted that it is led by seasoned politicians and that the kingdom has long sought clarity on the party’s stance regarding Buganda’s interests.

He emphasized that Ugandans across the country yearn for the rule of law, effective governance, improved healthcare, economic empowerment, and reliable public infrastructure. He urged DF to champion these priorities and embed them in their programs from the onset.

The Katikkiro expressed surprise at the party’s ability to field several capable flag bearers despite its young age. He cautioned aspiring leaders against denouncing the Kabaka or undermining Buganda’s aspirations for political gain, stressing that such actions would be a “grave political mistake.”

DF Party President Rt. Hon. Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba reaffirmed the party’s commitment to working with the kingdom to advance values that promote goodwill, unity, and sustainable development across Uganda.

Mpuuga explained that DF chose not to field a presidential candidate in the upcoming elections due to unresolved national issues that hinder fair presidential contests. He argued that meaningful presidential competition requires comprehensive reforms, and DF’s immediate focus is to populate Parliament and local government with leaders capable of championing this reform agenda.

He further stated that Uganda needs a “second Lancaster” — a fresh national dialogue where citizens openly and transparently discuss the political and economic issues necessary to restore normalcy and chart a path toward genuine progress.
