By Kabuye Ronald

In a bold step towards electoral refinement, Makerere University embraced a transformative shift in its polling station setup. Today’s gathering, featuring 16 active participants, including LC1 and LC2 chairmen and the respected GISO Mulindwa Musa, marked a pivotal moment in the university’s electoral history.

Representing the vibrant parishes of Muluka I, Muluka II, Muluka III, and Muluka IV, the primary agenda was the meticulous reorganization of polling stations. Mr. Walusimbi’s proposal to align stations with the university’s 19 villages ignited lively discussions but was ultimately met with unanimous rejection.

The discourse delved into preserving traditions, with Mr. Tugume Nicholas proposing a name change for a polling station honoring Professor Kakooza Theresa, met with a resounding preference for historical continuity.

Concerns about election malpractices and voter transportation to Makerere University prompted insights from Assistant District Election Administrator ADEA/ Returning Officer Kawempe Division’s Rehemah Nassuna.

Rehemah clarified the evolving roles of NIRA and chairmen in the intricate processes of voter registration and transfers.

Navigating the complexities of student residency, the debate unfolded around whether alumni should be removed from the voting register. The consensus highlighted the sanctity of an individual’s right to choose their voting location.

In a landmark decision, all 15 polling stations were confirmed to remain unchanged, underlining a unified stance for the upcoming general elections. Group chairman Mr. Bateganya Willy expressed gratitude to the Electoral Commission for pioneering this groundbreaking dialogue, foreseeing its lasting impact on Makerere University’s electoral landscape.

In a gesture of empowerment, voter education books were distributed to the group, complemented by branded Electoral Commission T-shirts and caps, symbolizing a tangible commitment to an informed and engaged electorate.

As the meeting concluded, Ms. Jennifer Nambuuya from Mary Stuart, the sole woman chairperson, offered a heartfelt prayer, encapsulating the collective commitment to a more streamlined and inclusive electoral future at Makerere University.
