Genomics and Data Science: Makerere University Stresses Need for Skilled Workforce to Drive Innovation

By Jumah Kakomo

Makerere University has emphasized the importance of investing in education and capacity building to harness the potential of genomics.

Speaking at the 15th African society of human genetics (AFSHG) and the 1st Uganda genomics held at Kampala, under the theme “Harnessing Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for African Genomics” the vice Chancellor of Makerere university professor Barnabas Nawangwe, stressed that the future of genomics depends not only on research infrastructure but also on the development of skilled human resources.

“Genomics is a rapidly evolving field that requires a workforce with specialized skills and knowledge,” Professor Nawangwe said. “As we invest in research infrastructure and technology, we must also prioritize education and capacity building to ensure that we have the skilled personnel needed to drive innovation and discovery in genomics.”

Professor Nawangwe noted that Makerere University has already taken steps to invest in genomics education and research, including the establishment of more genomics laboratory and the development of more programs in genomics and bioinformatics

However, he emphasized that more needs to be done to address the shortage of skilled personnel in genomics and related fields. “We need to invest in more scholarships, fellowships, and training programs that support the development of the next generation of genomics researchers and professionals,” Professor Nawangwe said.

Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Monica Musenero, in her message presented by Professor Mwikirize Cosmus, emphasized the transformative impact of genetics and genomics on research, public health, and science and technology.

Dr. Musenero highlighted the immense potential of these fields to revolutionize various sectors.

“Genetics and genomics have undeniably reshaped the landscape of research and public health,” Dr. Musenero stated. “These fields have enabled us to better understand the intricacies of life, develop more effective treatments, and improve our ability to prevent and control diseases.”

Dr. Musenero emphasized that Uganda is committed to harnessing the potential of genetics and genomics to drive scientific innovation, improve public health, and promote economic growth. She encouraged researchers, scientists, and policymakers to collaborate and invest in these fields to unlock their full potential.

In the same vein, Dr. Ruth Aceng, the Minister of Health, in her statement read by Professor Moses Joloba, announced that the government has developed a comprehensive master plan to integrate genomics into public health. This groundbreaking initiative will initially focus on pathogen surveillance and clinical care, revolutionizing the country’s healthcare system.

The master plan is designed to leverage genomics to improve disease detection, prevention, and treatment.

According to Aceng, by applying genomic technologies, healthcare professionals will be able to identify and track infectious diseases more accurately, enabling swift and targeted interventions

Dr. Aceng emphasized that the government is committed to harnessing the power of genomics to enhance public health outcomes. “We recognize the immense potential of genomics in transforming our healthcare system,” she stated. “Our master plan will ensure that we harness this potential to improve the health and wellbeing of all Ugandans.”

The Director of Uganda Medical research council, and Uganda Virus Research Institute Professor Moffat Nyirenda says the key to advancing genomics research in Africa lies in building strong, sustainable collaboration
